'Pregnant man' gives birth to daughter

Thomas Beatie reportedly had a baby girl Sunday at an Oregon hospital

Thomas Beatie, the transgendered man who rose to national attention when he became pregnant, gave birth June 29 to a girl, People magazine and ABC News reported. He and his daughter are doing well, he told People.
Beatie grew up in Hawaii as a girl but later legally changed to a male identity, took hormone shots and had his breasts surgically removed, but kept his female reproductive organs.
A spokesperson from St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Ore., where Beatie reportedly gave birth said she could "neither confirm nor deny the presence of that patient at our facility."

Beatie told People that despite published reports, the baby was not born via Caesarean section, but did not give any other information about the birth.
His wife Nancy, 46, was unable to bear children since she'd had a hysterectomy. Beatie became pregnant using donor sperm and artificial insemination.
“I opted not to do anything with my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day,” he told Oprah Winfrey during an April interview. Nancy said she inseminated him with a syringe using sperm purchased from a bank.
The couple live in Bend, Ore., and Nancy has two adult children.

The 25 most difficult question on a job inteview

Being prepared is half the battle.

1. Tell me about yourself.
Since this is often the opening question in an interview, be extracareful that you don't run off at the mouth. Keep your answer to a minute or two at most. Cover four topics: early years, education, work history, and recent career experience. Emphasize this last subject. Remember that this is likely to be a warm-up question. Don't waste your best points on it.
2. What do you know about our organization?
You should be able to discuss products or services, revenues, reputation, image, goals, problems, management style, people, history and philosophy. But don't act as if you know everything about the place. Let your answer show that you have taken the time to do some research, but don't overwhelm the interviewer, and make it clear that you wish to learn more.
You might start your answer in this manner: "In my job search, I've investigated a number of companies.
Yours is one of the few that interests me, for these reasons..."
Give your answer a positive tone. Don't say, "Well, everyone tells me that you're in all sorts of trouble, and that's why I'm here", even if that is why you're there.
3. Why do you want to work for us?
The deadliest answer you can give is "Because I like people." What else would you like-animals?
Here, and throughout the interview, a good answer comes from having done your homework so that you can speak in terms of the company's needs. You might say that your research has shown that the company is doing things you would like to be involved with, and that it's doing them in ways that greatly interest you. For example, if the organization is known for strong management, your answer should mention that fact and show that you would like to be a part of that team. If you were laid off in an across-the-board cutback, say so; otherwise, indicate that the move was your decision, the result of your action. Do not mention personality conflicts.
The interviewer may spend some time probing you on this issue, particularly if it is clear that you were terminated. The "We agreed to disagree" approach may be useful. Remember hat your references are likely to be checked, so don't concoct a story for an interview.
19. How do you feel about leaving all your benefits to find a new job?
Mention that you are concerned, naturally, but not panicked. You are willing to accept some risk to find the right job for yourself. Don't suggest that security might interest you more than getting the job done successfully.
20. In your current (last) position, what features do (did) you like the most? The least?
Be careful and be positive. Describe more features that you liked than disliked. Don't cite personality problems. If you make your last job sound terrible, an interviewer may wonder why you remained there until now.
21. What do you think of your boss?
Be as positive as you can. A potential boss is likely to wonder if you might talk about him in similar terms at some point in the future.
22. Why aren't you earning more at your age?
Say that this is one reason that you are conducting this job search. Don't be defensive.
23. What do you feel this position should pay?
Salary is a delicate topic. We suggest that you defer tying yourself to a precise figure for as long as you can do so politely. You might say, "I understand that the range for this job is between $______ and $______. That seems appropriate for the job as I understand it." You might answer the question with a question: "Perhaps you can help me on this one. Can you tell me if there is a range for similar jobs in the organization?"
If you are asked the question during an initial screening interview, you might say that you feel you need to know more about the position's responsibilities before you could give a meaningful answer to that question. Here, too, either by asking the interviewer or search executive (if one is involved), or in research done as part of your homework, you can try to find out whether there is a salary grade attached to the job. If there is, and if you can live with it, say that the range seems right to you.
If the interviewer continues to probe, you might say, "You know that I'm making $______ now. Like everyone else, I'd like to improve on that figure, but my major interest is with the job itself." Remember that the act of taking a new job does not, in and of itself, make you worth more money.
If a search firm is involved, your contact there may be able to help with the salary question. He or she may even be able to run interference for you. If, for instance, he tells you what the position pays, and you tell him that you are earning that amount now and would Like to do a bit better, he might go back to the employer and propose that you be offered an additional 10%.
If no price range is attached to the job, and the interviewer continues to press the subject, then you will have to restpond with a number. You cannot leave the impression that it does not really matter, that you'll accept whatever is offered. If you've been making $80,000 a year, you can't say that a $35,000 figure would be fine without sounding as if you've given up on yourself. (If you are making a radical career change, however, this kind of disparity may be more reasonable and understandable.)
Don't sell yourself short, but continue to stress the fact that the job itself is the most important thing in your mind. The interviewer may be trying to determine just how much you want the job. Don't leave the impression that money is the only thing that is important to you. Link questions of salary to the work itself.
But whenever possible, say as little as you can about salary until you reach the "final" stage of the interview process. At that point, you know that the company is genuinely interested in you and that it is likely to be flexible in salary negotiations.
24. What are your long-range goals?
Refer back to the planning phase of your job search. Don't answer, "I want the job you've advertised." Relate your goals to the company you are interviewing: 'in a firm like yours, I would like to..."
25. How successful do you you've been so far?
Say that, all-in-all, you're happy with the way your career has progressed so far. Given the normal ups and downs of life, you feel that you've done quite well and have no complaints.
Present a positive and confident picture of yourself, but don't overstate your case. An answer like, "Everything's wonderful! I can't think of a time when things were going better! I'm overjoyed!" is likely to make an interviewer wonder whether you're trying to fool him . . . or yourself. The most convincing confidence is usually quiet confidence.

'How could you spend 27 years in prison and ... not want to kill everybody?' Tony Yayo wonders.

Madiba's house sits on a breezy, tree-lined street in a well-to-do neighborhood in the western part of Johannesburg, South Africa. Stucco walls surround the nondescript property on a block filled with nothing but nondescript properties. Older couples take their afternoon walks nearby. Kids can be heard playing in the distance, and entire families drive by in station wagons and minivans. If you didn't know any better, you'd think you were in any number of middle-class neighborhoods in southern California — not at the home of one of the 20th century's greatest rebels.
Madiba is the common name for Nelson Mandela; it is the name of his family's clan, carried by its elders as a sign of respect. And Mandela, of course, is the former leader of South Africa, celebrated anti-apartheid freedom fighter and global peace activist.
And 50 Cent and MTV News were standing in his driveway.

Mandela is unequivocally beloved in a country known for its deep divisions and tumultuous racial history. When we had arrived half an hour earlier, Mandela was just chilling in his living room, reading the newspaper by himself with a glass of water at his side. He was white-haired and frail, lacking the energy to make frequent public appearances. The day's visit included just a quick exchange of greetings and a handful of photos. The glassy-eyed Mandela seemed to have only a passing recognition of who 50 Cent was, as opposed to the younger members of Mandela's family who crowded around the rapper upon his exit.
All day, Mandla Mandela, Madiba's 32-year-old grandson, had accompanied 50 as our pared-down entourage (Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks had decided to skip the trip in order to get some much-needed sleep) traveled through Johannesburg and Soweto, visiting landmarks and museums memorializing South Africa's struggle to overcome apartheid, a 42-year legal segregation between black and white South Africans that ended in 1990, thanks in large part to Mandela's resistance and persistence.
Though their meeting was limited to just a few minutes, the experience of meeting Nelson Mandela had clearly moved 50 Cent. "There was a possibility when I woke up this morning that I could meet him," he said. "I got up early thinking it might happen. But because he's [nearly] 90 years old, he doesn't get up like he used to, early in the morning.
"I've been enlightened in a lot of different ways," 50 continued, referring to his tours of the Apartheid Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum with Mandla Mandela. "To have someone directly involved give me information was exciting. You know, I learn faster hands-on than I do from reading books. It's exciting to be in a position where people [of the Mandelas' stature] will actually take the time out to explain these things to me."
Throughout our week in South Africa and Tanzania, sold-out arenas and the infectious fervor of the people of Africa had affirmed to us 50's frequent boast that he is the most popular international star in hip-hop. But this trip to Africa, and South Africa especially, had an additional purpose, an unexpected, socially conscious one. It was part of 50 Cent's agenda to witness firsthand the cultural landscape of this country and how it affects him as a black man in America.
"It's way bigger than music," he said. "Music has been an opportunity for me. It's taken me places that I didn't even think were possible for me to go. Right now, it feels like everything's an option. If I have a personal interest in it, all I have to do is actually put my mind to it — allow myself to be available for it."
That much would be apparent three days after meeting Mandela, when our entire entourage traveled by helicopter eight miles off the coast of Cape Town, the southernmost tip of the African continent, to Robben Island. For around 400 years, the island has been a place of exile, where governments and ruling parties have banished perceived criminals, lepers and troublemakers. During apartheid, many members of the African National Congress (of which Mandela was a leader) were imprisoned here under brutal conditions.
Today, the prison has been turned into a museum so that future generations will never forget the unforgiving lessons of apartheid.
The island itself is a barren landscape, with minimal vegetation and only the occasional deer or penguin; the silence that pervades the place was a constant reminder of just how far from home we really were. Our tour guide was a man who had been imprisoned there for 18 years for setting off a bomb in a suburban shopping mall, injuring 57 people (the resistance to apartheid was often a violent struggle). He took our entire group (including Yayo and Banks, who made it a point to participate in this day's trip) through the prison and across the island. While the austerity of our surroundings made everyone quiet during the tour, it wasn't until we were brought to Nelson Mandela's prison cell that 50 Cent, Yayo and Banks seemed truly moved by the experience.
Mandela spent 27 years in the tiny cell, approximately 6 feet by 6 feet. It had been preserved as a powerful reminder of the conditions of Robben Island's most famous — and resilient — inhabitant.
The cell had no toilet and no real bed, except for a small, thin foam cushion that resembles a yoga mat. "That's the equivalent to the cushion they put under your carpet," 50 observed. Our guide explained how authorities would often put political prisoners across the hallway from much larger cells that would house only a single dog "to demean them. To show them they weren't even as valuable as a common dog."
The rappers stood silent inside the cell, taking in the gravity and history of the space.

IS KISSING DANGEROUS????

“You’d better be careful whom you kiss,” I was told. I was in high school and infectious mononucleosis (also called mono) was “going around.” Kids missed school for a month; and everyone was told it was because “too many people were kissing too many people.” As it turns out, there were only two or three kids who had mono, and they didn’t even know each other. The rest of it was hysteria, rumor or myth. But I always wondered about “kissing disease,” as many called it. Was it really dangerous? Was kissing really so risky?
Mono is caused by infection with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). After exposure to EBV, there are usually no symptoms at all – in fact, up to 95 percent of adults have antibody evidence of past EBV infection even though the vast majority recalled no related illness. For reasons that remain unknown, only some people develop mono after exposure to EBV, with fatigue, headache, muscle or joint aches, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and sore throat. While it is true that the virus is shed in the saliva and can be transmitted by kissing, mono is not a highly contagious illness and it can also be transmitted by other means, such as coughing or sneezing. Preventing the spread of EBV is not easy since there are often no symptoms. Even when there are, one may be contagious before the illness is recognized.
Other infections can cause illness resembling mono, including cytomegalovirus (CMV) and other viral infections. Blood tests usually can establish the diagnosis of mono when necessary.
There is no effective therapy for mono, although acetaminophen or ibuprofen and fluids can be helpful in relieving symptoms. The vast majority of people who have it recover completely within a week or two. Occasionally fatigue lasts more than month, but even then, a return to normal is expected. Because the spleen may become enlarged and could rupture if injured, persons with mono are advised to avoid contact sports for at least a month after recovery.
Infections related to kissing
During any exchange of bodily fluids, there is a risk of transmitting infectious agents. However, the body has defense systems in place to prevent infection, though these work better for some infections than others. For example, HIV and hepatitis B are relatively easy to transmit through sexual intercourse, while hepatitis C is not as readily spread sexually.
Similarly, some infections are harder to transmit through kissing than others. HIV is rarely (if ever) transmitted through kissing; when it does occur it probably relates to open sores in the mouth that allow exposure to blood, not just saliva. On the other hand, many other viral infections are easy to transmit by kissing: herpes simplex virus, the cause of cold sores or fever blisters, is a common example. In fact, the illnesses commonly transmitted by kissing, including mono, have a minimal impact on overall health.
The bottom line
While it is true that EBV is easy to transmit from one person to another through kissing, there is usually no recognized illness associated with the infection. Even when mono does follow, complete recovery in a short period is the rule. While “kissing disease” is real, kissing is rarely a danger to your health.

A paparazzo who pressed charges against Britney Spears after her car allegedly ran over his foot was himself to blame for any injury it may have caused, prosecutors said in refusing to pursue the case.
After reviewing police records and a videotape of the incident last year, Deputy District Attorney Joseph D. Shidler wrote Friday that the "only way the victim's foot could have been where the video indicates it to be was by the victim placing it in that location."
The photographer, who was not identified in the report, filed a criminal complaint against Spears in early May, nearly six months after the alleged incident. A copy of the police complaint was not immediately available Monday, but it sought a felony charge of failing to stop after an accident involving an injury.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley's office reviewed a videotape and photos of the incident, which don't show the photographer being hit. The report also describes a chaotic scene surrounding Spears, with photographers on all sides of her car and "a lot of noise and confusion."
The report describes Spears' as "driving at an extremely slow rate of speed and in a straight path."
The 26-year-old pop star has had her share of trouble behind the wheel, including a highly publicized incident in 2006 where she was photographed driving with her son on her lap.
A misdemeanor hit-and-run charge stemming from a 2007 parking lot crash was dismissed after she settled with the car's owner. In October, she pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving without a valid license, and earlier this year was involved in a minor fender-bender on a Los Angeles freeway.
Also Monday, documents were released detailing a request from Spears' father for payments relating to his conservatorship arrangement.
The document filed on behalf of James Spears seeks an undisclosed amount of money for helping his daughter shop for groceries, handle custody issues with her husband, Kevin Federline, and visiting her in the hospital in February and March. The filing also states that he held meetings to shore up security at Spears' homes and occasionally cooked meals.
James Spears has temporary control of his daughter's finances. A hearing about that conservatorship is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Los Angeles.

PARIS (Reuters) - France said farewell to fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent at a funeral on Thursday attended by supermodels, film stars and President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Office workers and residents of nearby buildings leaned out of their windows as police held crowds back near the Paris church of Saint Roch where the ceremony was held.
Actress Catherine Deneuve, whose aura of refined elegance was most closely associated with the designer, read a poem by Walt Whitman, followed by a speech from Saint Laurent's long-time partner and business associate Pierre Berge.
"You could have slid into fashions at times, but instead you remained faithful to your own style, and you were quite right, for that style is now everywhere, perhaps not on fashion catwalks but in the streets of the whole world," Berge said.
Although Saint Laurent himself famously hated his own time as a conscript in the French army, his coffin was greeted by an armed honor guard, whose stiff military bearing contrasted strangely with the elegant mourners mingling after the service.
Sarkozy sat in the front row of the church alongside his wife Carla, a former model who used to strut the catwalk at Saint Laurent's glamorous shows.
Hailed as one of the great couturiers of the 20th century, Saint Laurent was part of a distinguished line of French designers from Coco Chanel to Christian Dior who consolidated the reputation of Paris as the fashion capital of the world.
A shy and reclusive figure in his later years with few close friends, his rank in the fashion world could nonetheless be gauged from the array of celebrities at Saint Roch, a church traditionally associated with artists and musicians.
Screen legend Jeanne Moreau joined the mourners, along with some of the models he dressed, including Claudia Schiffer and Laetitia Casta, and leading designers Christian Lacroix, John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Saint Laurent's body is to be cremated and the ashes spread in the garden of his villa in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh.
The oldest child of a rich French industrialist, Saint Laurent was born and grew up in Algeria, then a French colony, and showed an early talent for design, making clothes for his younger sisters' dolls.
After moving to Paris at the age of 17, he was hired by Christian Dior and soon became chief designer, producing acclaimed collections under the Dior label before striking out under his own name in 1962.
With Berge taking care of the management side, Saint Laurent built up the YSL brand into one of the world's most widely recognized fashion labels with hallmark designs like his women's tuxedo and trouser suits.
However he struggled with alcohol and drug problems as well as ill health and he became disillusioned with the fashion scene after he retired from designing in 2002.
